Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw: Balance Your Life, Boost Your Career

Enhance Your Well-Being Across Four Key Areas to Sustain Long-Term Music Success

Welcome to my 7 Habits for Music Creators series! In this ninth video, we'll dive into Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw. This habit is crucial as it focuses on taking care of yourself in four key areas, ensuring your music career stands the test of time without burning out.

Sharpen the Saw means preserving and enhancing your greatest asset – YOU! It involves a balanced program for self-renewal in four essential life areas: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual. Remember, music is one part of your life, not the whole. To be at your best, you must nurture each dimension. Let's explore some examples of activities for each area:

Physical: Beneficial eating, regular exercise, and sufficient rest. Social/Emotional: Making meaningful connections with others online and offline, avoiding negative energy, and collaborating with fellow artists. Mental: Engaging in learning, reading, and staying informed about the music industry. Spiritual: Spending time in nature, meditating, and working on your sense of purpose and values.

Remember, these areas are interconnected, so neglecting one can affect the others. Maintaining balance will allow you to synergize these dimensions, enabling you to achieve more in less time.

By renewing yourself in each area, you foster growth and change in your life. Sharpening the Saw keeps you fresh and ready to practice the other six habits. It increases your capacity to handle challenges and thrive in your music career. Just as any tool requires regular maintenance, you need to regularly renew yourself to remain effective.

Let's look at some practical ways you can sharpen your saw:

  1. Physical: Prioritize exercise, healthy eating, and sufficient sleep for optimal productivity.

  2. Social/Emotional: Make new connections, surround yourself with positive people, and engage in meaningful conversations.

  3. Mental: Feed your mind with productive content like books, podcasts, and online tutorials.

  4. Spiritual: Focus on your sense of purpose, practice self-examination, and spend time in silence and meditation.

Your music career is just one aspect of your life. To ensure longevity and success, make sharpening the saw a priority. Schedule time for these activities, protect that time from distractions, and eliminate time-wasters from your life. Start small, find ways to combine activities, and remember to take time for yourself when life gets overwhelming.

As we conclude the 7 Habits series, you've likely uncovered new ideas and opportunities to enhance your music career. By consistently living these habits, you'll become profoundly more effective in achieving your goals.
